Are You Watching This (RUWT) is an application for sports fans. Its purpose is to alert fans only when the most exciting games are on and worth watching.

RUWT was founded in 2007 by Mark Phillips as a way for sports fans to determine what games are worth watching and what channel to tune in to in their areas.

RUWT’s algorithm is designed to alert users only when a game is worth watching. Rather than continuous updates of games that aren’t exciting, the application actually rates the games on a scale using collected data and only alerts for the most exciting games.

At first glance, users may think this is a typical sports site. The interview video on the home page with founder Mark Phillips is informative and helps with understanding the way RUWT works.

By providing information about cable/satellite providers, users’ alerts will include what local channel to watch to see the action. Users also customize their profiles with a short bio, favorite jersey number, hometown, current town, favorite teams, favorite sports quotes, favorite sports movies, favorite sports moment, favorite athletes, players they love to hate, and the best game they’ve ever attended.

Users may then customize their alerts. They can choose which sports, frequency of alerts, whether they wish to only be notified of games that are viewable in their area, frequency of email and cell phone alerts (this is where the cell phone number is requested).

In addition to alerts, users may view what games are occurring and root for a game. This data goes into the overall algorithm in calculating how exciting a game is and whether it is worth watching. Users can also choose which team they predict will win the game. It is interesting to see the RUWTbot add and remove roots as time goes on. A space is provided for users to “shout” about each game as well. Game pages also include news stories related to the teams playing in each game.

Registration may be completed by linking the app with Facebook or by providing a zip code, cable or satellite television provider, name, email, and password.

RUWT is completely free to use. Texting fees may apply to alerts depending on individual cell plans.
